WHY LITERATURE SHOULD BE TAUGHT IN SCHOOL

Good morning to our respected principal, teachers and friends. I feel honoured to deliver this speech entitled, “Why Literature Should Be Taught in School”.
I am sure many of us have enjoyed reading stories like ‘Cinderella’, ‘Snow White’, or ’Sang Kancil and Sang Buaya’ among other, when we were young. The plots and characters will remain in our mainds for a long time. Such is the wonder of literature. It is able to leave a mark in our lives.
Literature allows us to learn more about the cultures and traditions of others. Through reading these stories, we can understand the values of different societies and the different cultures practised. This will widen our perspective of ourselves and of others.
Literature also instils in us good moral values. We tend to identify with the heroes and heroins in the story, usally characters who have triumphed over evil and have overcome challenges. Thus, we are able to discover the meanings of life.
Reading literature can also be a form of enjoyment. The various plots can be intriguing and interesting. It help us to relieve stress and make us more adept readers.
Lastly, reading literature can help us to improve our language. We can learn new words and enhance our vocabulary, as well as explore different styles of writing.
The benefits of learning literature as I have mentioned clearly support why literature should be taught in schools. Thank you.
